Welcome back to the 2024 school year at Redlynch State College - to returning families, new families and especially to our new Prep students! It is such an exciting time of year for these students and I look forward to meeting and spending time with them throughout the year. I hope that you all had a chance to relax and enjoy the festive season. Welcome also to the new staff at the College. We have 13 new teachers on the secondary campus and we will feature them in the next newsletter.
Our thoughts are with the many staff, Redlynch families and community members that were impacted by the recent weather events. Unfortunately, these events saw a number of staff have significant damage to their property with some losing everything. A big thank you to the many generous members of our community who helped and supported the people impacted. All the staff impacted are back at work. Thank you for your commitment to our school community!
At the time of writing this, we have counted 1906 students in our Day 8 (census day) count. That is very close to the number of students we started with last year. All these students should now be in regular attendance and working to achieve their potential in their classes. I look forward to visiting classrooms and meeting with the students throughout the year.
MOBILE PHONE POLICY
The Redlynch State College Mobile Phone Policy has been emailed to parents. As has been reported in the media, “Phones are Away for the Day.” I spoke to students in the first week of term on the full Secondary Campus parade and made my expectations very clear with them. As we already had a mobile phone policy in place, the new policy only has minor changes. I thank you for your support and sincerely hope that students adhere to the policy.
P&C Association
The Redlynch State College Parents and Citizens Association is made up of a small number of highly committed parents and community members. The P&C, in partnership with College Executive Administration, collaborate to continue to make improvements to how we deliver education at the College.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the AGM will be held on Tuesday 26th March (week 10) starting with a meet and greet at 6:00pm at the RSC Community Centre at the top of the Primary Campus, with the meeting to commence at 6:30pm. Can I encourage you to attend and contribute if you are able to? I would encourage all parents to become members of the P & C. To join or to renew your membership please follow the link below. There is no requirement to attend meetings however being a member ensures you receive all communications from the P&C in regards to upcoming meetings and events.

Road Safety
Road safety continues to concern me and the number of students blatantly disregarding the road rules on their e-scooters is very disturbing. I have already heard of a number of near misses where students have failed to stop at a red light, riding without a helmet and not paying attention to the roads they are riding on. Can I implore you to make your expectations regarding this very clear with your children. We all want to ensure that our students arrive at school and get home safe.
Student safety is our number one priority and as a College Community we can all work together to keep our students safe at pick up and drop off by always using the marked pedestrian crossings, not queuing across the pedestrian crossings, by not parking on the grass verges surrounding the College, not stopping in the no standing or stopping zones and adhering to the 2-minute wait time in the kiss and drop zone. All students will be safe if we all work together.
BYO Devices & NAPLAN
Redlynch is a BYO device school – Year 1 to 4 device is an iPad and Year 5 to 12 is a laptop. To ensure these devices are used to their full advantage and to support student learning we please ask that the device is fully charged and is at school every day.
NAPLAN is scheduled for Weeks 8 and 9 in 2024 for students in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress.
ATTENDANCE
Every day counts towards a quality education. If your child misses just one day per fortnight this equates to missing four weeks per year which equates to one year missed over their school career. It is imperative that students aim to keep their attendance above 95% to ensure they are successful at school.
Mike Hansen
Executive Principal
I’d like to extend a special welcome to all the new families to our College and hope your child has settled in well, making new friends and enjoying the learning opportunities we offer.
It was especially great to welcome our new Prep students to school. It is always special to see the oversized bags and uniforms walk through the gates attached to excited young Preppies as they start their schooling adventures with us. Some of them were up very early, eager to start the day, some were a little hesitant and some had a few tears to start with. The beginning of and ending to school is such a special time for both students and families. These are memories that will be recalled in thirteen years’ time when our current Prep students graduate from school.
Staff have been working hard to get the year off to a smooth and fun filled start and I ask that you support them where ever possible. Please ensure to keep the communication lines open with your child’s teacher so that they can support the learning journey for your child effectively.
Parent teacher interviews will be held in Week 9, Tuesday 19th March. Information on booking an interview will be forwarded in the coming weeks.
Year 4 and 6 students will be attending our swimming program this term (Week 3 – 9). Please ensure permission and payment is finalised as soon as possible.
NAPLAN 2024
In 2024, NAPLAN will occur in Term 1. If your child is in Year 3 and/or Year 5 you will have received an email recently with information in regards to this. In brief:
- Dates for NAPLAN – Week 8/9 in Term 1.
- BYO Devices – Year 3: iPad, Year 5: Laptop
- Ensure your child has headphones that work with their device (this is on the stationery list)
- Ensure the NAP Lock down browser has been loaded on to your child’s device (details in email)
Attendance
Each term our target attendance is 95% or above. Every day your child misses or turns up late is a day or hour that they cannot get back.
Also, some children are arriving very early to school. Children should not be at school before 8:15am. Please contact OSHC if you require before school care for your child.
Uniforms
I would also like to remind parents that RSC is a uniform approved school and all students are required to attend school in full uniform. If for some reason your child is unable to wear their full uniform, please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance by email or note. Full details of uniform requirements can be found on our website.
School Photos
Primary Campus photos will be taken on the 21st and 22nd March, 2024. See "School Photos" article below for more details.
I look forward to a successful 2024 year full of learning, fun and connecting with families as well as seeing our students achieve new goals, whatever they may be.
Welcome Back for 2024 – The Secondary Campus has had a smooth transition back into action in 2024. Thank you to Mr Hooper for enacting a well drilled start to the year. Thank you to all the students who have listened and followed instructions. A big thank you to all the parents and guardians who have stopped and chatted with myself and other staff. We have 13 new staff who have started in 2024. Too many to name here, although we will promote them via our social media platforms.
I hope all students and staff have a great 2024.
School Photos Friday 16th February – The secondary campus will have school photos on Friday 16th February. We want these to be the best photos the College can have. All students will need to be consistent in their uniform.
- Students must wear the Normal College uniform
- No Sports shirts
- No Senior shirts
- No Live Production shirts
- Or any other College shirt
We will have shirts for students to wear if they are not in normal school uniform.
Please ensure you are dressed in the correct uniform.
*No student will have photos taken if they are not in normal school uniform.
*Please ensure that students with piercings maintain a respectable look for the photos and abide by the uniform policy.
Information will be provided for those students not present on Photo day by MSP Photography.
Attendance – Remember that attendance is crucial to performing well in any area. All subjects at school are beneficial to the future of all our students. Students should aim to be at school each and every day to improve their chances of doing the best they possibly can. 90% attendance sounds like a good number, however that equates to missing 20 days of school, which equates to 4 weeks, and that’s a lot.
Maurice Andrejic - Head of Campus (Secondary)
Secondary Campus Deputy Principal Update
Welcome to the 2024 school year. My name is Adrian Hooper and I am the Deputy Principal overseeing both the Year 8s and the Year 11s again this year. Working with me on both Year levels will be HoD of Student Support and Wellbeing, Mrs Anita Beutel. Supporting our students in Year 8 will be Year level Dean, Mrs Kylie Child and in Year 11, Year level Dean Ms Cassie Roads.
I am also the Deputy Principal tasked with creating and maintain the Secondary campus timetable.
Timetables, Subject Changes and Assessment Calendars
We have had a relatively smooth start to the year with regard to students’ timetabled classes. I would like to thank parents for all their work and support in Term 3 and 4 of last year with the subject selection process. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, subject changes have now closed for Semester 1.
Parents and students are reminded students can access their timetables at any time through OneSchool. I have emailed all students the instructions on how to do so.
The instruction email also shows students how they can download from OneSchool their own personal assessment calendar. These will be available from the beginning of Week 3. Students are reminded to download this important document a few times a term, or particularly if their classroom teacher has informed them of an assessment date change. Timetables and assessment calendars are also available in QParents for those parents who have registered.
Please continue to remind your child to bring their fully-charged laptop each day and check their emails daily.
Expectations of the Senior School
Its an exciting time for both Year 11 and 12 students; for Year 11s commencing their post-compulsory senior phase of learning and for Year 12s commencing their last year of high school. It is timely that we remind all Year 11 and 12 students of the expectations of the Senior School:
- Actively participate in the academic program;
- Attend school between 8:45am and 2:55pm daily as per your timetable and maintain an attendance rate of at least 90%;
- Have less than 10% unacceptable/unexplained reasons for lateness to school;
- Attend all timetabled lessons, unless absent due to a medical or other reasonable circumstance verified by parent/carer;
- Have no incidents of truancy;
- Comply with the Redlynch State College Student Code of Conduct;
- Complete required course work and assessment for each subject;
- Submit all drafts and assessment items by the required due dates;
- Attend all scheduled exams;
- If relevant, attend all work placement requirements according to your timetable.
I look forward to working with all parents this year, especially those with children in Years 8 and 11.
Welcome back to school. My name is Natasha Glover and I am the Deputy Principal overseeing both the Year 9s and the Year 12s again this year as well as the International Student Program. Supporting me with Year 12s will be Mr Matt Crosby, HoD Senior Schooling and Ms Rebecca Meyer, Transition Pathway Officer. Mrs Nicole Neil, HoD of Student Support will also be supporting both Year levels as well as Ms Samantha Parkinson, Dean, Year 9. While managing and overseeing the International Program, Mr Nick Smith, HoD Languages, Mr Dudley Bertram, EALD teacher and Ms Cait Pearson, Homestay coordinator will be supporting our international students.
Congratulations to our College Leaders for 2024, Natalie Bean and Ace Almond, College Captains, Joyce Neah and Taryn Ivory, College Vice Captains and to all of our other Leaders across the College. All these students will be acknowledged and receive their badges at our upcoming Leadership Induction Ceremony on Tuesday 14 February.
Our students are to be commended on a great start to the year. We have seen a few changes and updates to some of our general rules and the students, in the main, have accepted these and moved on to the business of learning.
A few reminders:
- Mobile phones and smart devices are ‘Away for the Day’, switched off and in your pocket
- Only one student to a toilet cubicle
- Students are to attend all timetabled classes
- Students to remain on campus from 8:45am to 2:55pm, unless parent/carer notification has been received by the College

Year 12 Date Claimer – Formal 2024 – Friday 21st June – Pullman International
This is going to be a very special year for our Year 12s, the Graduating class of 2024. A year of ‘lasts’, but a year of preparing for a lifetime of ‘firsts’. If you have any questions regarding your son/daughter’s education, you can email me at the college on nglov12@eq.edu.au
I look forward to working with you all this year.
The 2024 school year has begun and as Head of Department – HPE I have encouraged my staff to emphasise to students that they need to do their best at all times. By best, I mean being respectful, being committed to their learning and participating safely in their lessons. Staff have emailed home to introduce themselves, give an outline of the term and to ensure email addresses are correct. If you have any questions or concerns, please address them with us. I encourage parents/carers to look over your child’s workbook (electronic in OneNote). Also, a reminder to review your child’s assessment dates on the assessment schedule which will be active this week.
We have 3 new staff, Miss. Verrios, Mr. Podhaczky and Mr. Fisher, we welcome them to the HPE team. We're excited to have them on board and look forward to a fantastic year together at RSC.
I wish our staff all the best as we embark on this new school year.

2024 Carnivals
Cross Country – Term 1 Week 8 - Tues 12th March p1 and 2 (nomination only, down at Freshwater Creek)
Athletics – Pre-carnival events Term 2 Week 10 – Wed 19th July
Athletics – Term 3 Week 2 - Tues 16th July
Swimming – Term 4 Week 1 - Friday 4th Oct at Marlin Coast Pool
These carnivals are whole school events where attendance is mandatory. There are opportunities for students to compete at a high level, to break school records and secure a position on the school team to compete at the Trinity Coast North and at a recreational/fun level to gain points for their individual houses. It is often the house with the highest numbers of recreational/fun competitors that wins the carnival, so the more students representing their house, the greater their chance of victory. Each carnival has a theme so students can dress up and show their school/house spirit to gain more points.
Extra-Curricular Interschool Sport
Redlynch State College takes parts in a number of extra-curricular sports over the course of the year. Students are able to nominate and trial for these teams which will either - compete at Gala Day competitions or after school over a number of weeks. Students will need to listen on parade and during morning notices and read their emails to receive information regarding various sports and trials.
TCN/Peninsula
If students wish to make a Peninsula team they are required to make the Trinity Coast North (TCN) team and compete at the Peninsula trials. Parents will receive emails from our Sports Coordinator in which you will need to register your child’s interest in trialling for TCN by filling out the online form. These links are emailed to parents at the start of each month. We will then email the required permission notes to the interested parents. Students need to ensure parents fill out and sign these forms, bring them to school to get signed by one of the 3 Deputy Principals, Head of Campus or Executive Principal. They will then need to take these forms to the trial.
If you require any additional information regarding sport at Redlynch State College please contact Mr Fleeting via email bflee4@eq.edu.au or phone.
Outdoor Education
Another great start to the year for performing arts students at RSC. The office has been very busy with RACE dance and drama applications with last auditions taking place on the afternoon of Friday 2nd February. All students should be commended for having a go; the number of applicants for all our RACE Drama, Dance and Music has far exceeded the positions available, pushing competition and standards to new heights.
Senior RACE Dance have already put together a wonderful contemporary lyrical choreographed by Shelley of ‘Dance Moore Choreography’ based in Sydney. Organised by senior dance teacher, Ms Parkinson, together Shelley, Sam and the girls have put together a spectacular piece of work. Rehearsing all day Sunday on the long weekend and following up with an intensive half day workshop on the Monday. Even without the many hours of repetition and polishing to come, I was privileged to see a preview and the choreography is spectacular.
The RACE Drama teachers this year are Mr Holloway with the Year 5/6s, Miss Pegrum with the Year 7/8s and Mrs Riles with the Year 9/10s and Senior group. The auditions are now all complete and after school RACE drama classes commenced week 3.
Mr Bruce’s RACE Music classes are also in full swing with two groups of mixed year levels offering the best possible balance in ensemble and opportunity for the young musicians to develop their talent. The students will work on developing a performance portfolio in preparation for an intensive studio recording experience.
RACE Live Production welcomes Mr Holloway to the Tech Crew, he brings with him years of theatre experience, practical applications to live event logistics and specialised lighting systems. In anticipation of the countless hours behind the scenes of events at RSC, we extend our thanks to the Tech Crew students and teachers for the professional work they do.
Instrumental music classes have commenced. Ensembles are in full rehearsal mode and new music has been introduced with the Fanfare competition in mind. Parents, please check your student timetables for scheduled lesson times and encourage a heightened awareness and strategies towards regular home practice and lesson attendance. Congratulations to all the students and the hard-working instrumental teachers including Mr Jackson (Junior Strings), Ms Baker (Intermediate & Senior Strings), Mr Perger (Brass & Percussion), and Instrumental Music Coordinator Miss Rankine (Woodwind & Percussion).
We are proud to be able to continue our free vocal ensemble group again this year with myself leading and Dr Katrina on piano. The vocal group is open to all Staff and Secondary Students. We gather to sing every Wednesday morning in PM05 music room before school starting at 7:45am.
Robert Crookes - Head of Department Performing Arts
Welcome back for 2024 – the P&C is looking forward to a fantastic year concentrating on the building of community, events and projects around the school to enhance all students educational experience.
For us to function well as a P&C we need not only all parents to join as members but also a few to put their hands up to take on executive roles to lead the organisation. The election of the executive committee takes place at the AGM each year. We have 7 positions on our executive committee so that the load can be shared and a team can be built to work together while still managing our home and work lives. Our current executives all work full time outside the organisation but receive great enjoyment and reward from our volunteer positions within the P&C.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the AGM will be held on Tuesday 26th March (week 10).
Details as per below:
When: Tuesday 26th March
Time: Get together at 6pm followed by AGM from 6:30pm
Where: RSC Community Centre (OSHC)
Purpose of meeting:
▪️Elect new Executive Committee (President, VP Governance, VP Business Units, VP Community and Fundraising, Treasurer, Minutes Secretary and Correspondence Secretary)
▪️Present 2023 Audited Financial Statements
▪️Endorse new memberships for 2024
Being a member of the P&C comes with no obligation. You will receive regular updates and invites, but it is up to you how involved you are. To become a member, please complete our online membership prior to the 12th March, there is no need to attend the AGM. https://forms.office.com/r/fpT0FyQsB7.
Please refer to the position description pictures here or contact the P&C President on president@rscpandc.com.au for more information. The current executive committee has a few members re-nominating for positions but it is always important that we have new people coming along and being involved and that we fill all our positions. If you would like to nominate for the Executive positions you must attend the AGM and can either nominate at the meeting or complete the form found in the link and email to the Executive.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

For more information please see our Rules & Policies page from our website:
https://redlynchsc.eq.edu.au/our-college/rules-and-policies
QParents - Access your child's information online
We would like to invite all our families to use QParents, a convenient, online parent portal.
QParents is an easier way for you to interact with our school and an additional method of obtaining your child’s school information. The secure online parent portal will allow you to access report cards, pay invoices and notify the school of absences, anytime, anywhere, via a web and mobile application.
New parents and parents who have not registered will have received an invitation email last week. It’s great to see that so many parents have registered already. Over time, QParents will become an integral part of how we communicate with parents. For more information visit qparents.qld.edu.au or email admin@redlynchsc.eq.edu.au
