Performing Arts News

Another great start to the year for performing arts students at RSC. The office has been very busy with RACE dance and drama applications with last auditions taking place on the afternoon of Friday 2nd February. All students should be commended for having a go; the number of applicants for all our RACE Drama, Dance and Music has far exceeded the positions available, pushing competition and standards to new heights.

Senior RACE Dance have already put together a wonderful contemporary lyrical choreographed by Shelley of ‘Dance Moore Choreography’ based in Sydney. Organised by senior dance teacher, Ms Parkinson, together Shelley, Sam and the girls have put together a spectacular piece of work. Rehearsing all day Sunday on the long weekend and following up with an intensive half day workshop on the Monday. Even without the many hours of repetition and polishing to come, I was privileged to see a preview and the choreography is spectacular.

The RACE Drama teachers this year are Mr Holloway with the Year 5/6s, Miss Pegrum with the Year 7/8s and Mrs Riles with the Year 9/10s and Senior group. The auditions are now all complete and after school RACE drama classes commenced week 3.

Mr Bruce’s RACE Music classes are also in full swing with two groups of mixed year levels offering the best possible balance in ensemble and opportunity for the young musicians to develop their talent. The students will work on developing a performance portfolio in preparation for an intensive studio recording experience.

RACE Live Production welcomes Mr Holloway to the Tech Crew, he brings with him years of theatre experience, practical applications to live event logistics and specialised lighting systems. In anticipation of the countless hours behind the scenes of events at RSC, we extend our thanks to the Tech Crew students and teachers for the professional work they do.

Instrumental music classes have commenced. Ensembles are in full rehearsal mode and new music has been introduced with the Fanfare competition in mind. Parents, please check your student timetables for scheduled lesson times and encourage a heightened awareness and strategies towards regular home practice and lesson attendance. Congratulations to all the students and the hard-working instrumental teachers including Mr Jackson (Junior Strings), Ms Baker (Intermediate & Senior Strings), Mr Perger (Brass & Percussion), and Instrumental Music Coordinator Miss Rankine (Woodwind & Percussion).

We are proud to be able to continue our free vocal ensemble group again this year with myself leading and Dr Katrina on piano. The vocal group is open to all Staff and Secondary Students. We gather to sing every Wednesday morning in PM05 music room before school starting at 7:45am.
